Latin for beginners I

Let’s say the time machine has invented and you decided to go back in time and you chose the Ancient Roman period. But something is missing. They… do not speak English. Then you do need some lingua latina knowledge if you want to share something with your new and noble friends.

Let’s start easy.

When you left the time machine, if you see one person say:
“Salve!” (“Greetings!” adressing ONE person)

But if you see more than one Roman say:
“Salvete!” (again “Greetings!” but adressing more than one)

So far so good. Now let’s introduce ourselves.

Mihi nomen est … (My name is …)
Quid est nomen tibi? (What is your name?)

If you do not understand what a person say or you’re deaf, say:
Scribite nomina hic, quaeso. (Write -your- names here, please.)

Congratulations! Those Romans didn’t understand you’re an alien from the future and accepted your inartistic taste in clothes! See you soon in another part of Latin for beginners!

(The “teacher” of this lesson is just a simple student of Latin Language and Literature at university and do not take any responsibilities if you fail to communicate with Romans.)
